We are excited to tell you that the Goodfellow Winter Carnival is returning to our school this year. The Carnival will take place on WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 18- TOMORROW. This is a one day event in which students in grades 1 to 8 will participate in 10 different events that are inspired by “Le Carnaval de Quebec” in Quebec City.
For the Carnival, students will be spending all three 100 minute blocks outside. They will come into the school for lunch and will spend recess inside. It will be very important that all students are dressed appropriately for the weather. We suggest that all students bring extra hats, mitts and socks to school that day.
The Goodfellow Carnival provides an opportunity for students to learn about an important French-Canadian celebration. It also provides the opportunity for students to build team work skills and for our intermediate students, it provides an opportunity to build leadership skills. The Carnival also lets us celebrate our great Canadian winter!
My name is Krista Dempster and I am an Environmental Studies masters student from York University. My area of concentration is in Indigenous Knowledge and Environmental Education. I am fulfilling my internship and fieldwork here at Goodfellow, as the project coordinator for Goodfellows Ecoschools project.
Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education and certification program for grades K-12 that helps school communities develop both ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the environmental footprint of schools.
The key areas of focus and achievement are: Teamwork & Leadership, Energy Conservation, Waste Minimization, School Ground Greening and Curriculum, and Environmental Stewardship.
The first step on the path to Goodfellow becoming an ecoschool is establishing an ECOTEAM. The EcoTeam drives the action of this initiative. Team membership that reflects all parts of the school community is central to the success of this program.
Any one interested in helping out and supporting Goodfellow’s ecoschool project can contact myself Krista Dempster at 705-716-8637 or contact Goodfellow P.S and ask for me.
